Yes, it is shocking! A letter was signed by 66 religious leaders in Iowa fully supporting the murder of babies. They sent their letter to the Des Moines Register advocating for abortion on demand and admonishing Iowa legislators to stop their efforts to reduce the number of baby murders in Iowa.
Leaders signing the letter are from the United Methodist Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church USA, United Church of Christ, and American Baptist churches. Anyone reading this who is from one of these organizations should contact those in authority and insist that correction be addressed to these leaders involved in grievous and deadly error.
As a pastor of God’s people and one who represents Him and His holy Scriptures I call on and pray for these people to repent of their deeply sinful error. They must think it is a godly thing to declare that a woman’s right to personal freedom is a priority over another human’s right to live. Every murderer thinks this very thing. Whether they use a gun, knife, blunt object, poison, or automobile, they demand their right to have what they want above another human’s right to live. God calls this evil and forbids it in commandment #6, “Thou shalt not kill,” Exodus 20:13.
I want to go a step further and pose the question for the sake of these leaders’ souls – is it possible that you even know God at all? How can you say that you know God and yet hold a personal conviction so antithetical to the God of life who commands the punishment of those who harm the unborn baby? Exodus 21:22-25 commands the one harming the unborn be repaid “life for life,” “eye for eye,” “burn for burn,” and “wound for wound.”
Such religious leaders would lead their congregants to believe that God in heaven wishes for babies to be murdered; that He would even murder babies Himself in heaven. This is how Jesus taught us to pray after all in “The Lord’s Prayer:” “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Christ followers are to pray for and work for God’s will to be done on earth in the same way He is doing it in heaven. For these leaders to want so strongly abortion to happen on earth they must think it is God’s will for abortion to happen in heaven also. Do they pray, “God, since you want babies murdered in heaven, please make it so that more mommies kill their babies here on earth”?
Anyone who could think this way and believe in any way that God or His Scriptures support the murdering of babies cannot possibly know Him. I hope this assessment of these people is wrong and that they will make it clear that this is not indeed what they think. And the millions of Christ followers in the United Methodist Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church USA, United Church of Christ, and American Baptist churches should certainly call on all these leaders to repent of their actions and retract their letter.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Matthew 6:9-13
