A Reformed and Refreshing Perspective on Productivity

So I just got this new book, highly recommended by Pastor John Piper, What’s Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done, by Matt Perman.  It looks to be a great read and helpful tool since I’m in great need, personally, of taking the next step of growth as a pastor and leader.  I hope to post a few thoughts on it as I read it.  Here are a couple as I begin.

For years I’ve had this uneasy feeling around my pastor friends when I see my need to be better organized, better structured as a leader and not only a better preacher of the word.  Often the answers back question the validity of methods or tactics in practical leadership.  But it just always seemed to me that a passion for the glory of God in all things demands a close look at organizational and personal leadership on a very practical level.

FINALLY, HERE’S A BROTHER WHO AGREES!!!  Matt Perman has written a beefy, theologically challenging, and highly practical book that I’ve been needing for many years.  Thank you, Matt, for writing what I need to read.

The point of the book is to call the reader to Gospel Driven Productivity (GDP) – “We are to use all that we have, in all areas of life, for the good of others, to the glory of God – and that this is the most exciting life” (p.28).

Highly practical, thoughtful, and yet at the same time gospel-centered, Perman keeps the atonement clear as the basis for all we are saying, “the only way to be productive is to realize we don’t actually have to be productive” (p.29).

Thank you Matt Perman for a good book!
