This Sunday at Koinos there will be a very important focus in our worship gathering – the sanctity of human life. Many churches across the country set aside time during the month of January to focus on this. Why?
In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated Sunday, January 22, 1984 as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. He did so noting that date was the 11th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that struck down our laws protecting the lives of unborn children. Since that time churches have devoted attention on a Sunday near that date calling on Almighty God to empower His church to work for the end of abortion and the protection of all human life.
January 22, 2022 will be the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. In those 49 years as many as 60 million babies have been aborted. So we will join thousands of God’s churches across the country to pray and proclaim God’s word calling for the end of this horrific evil.
But there is more. We do this for a much bigger reason than the proclamation of a president. We do it because of who God is. He is the God of heaven who created all human life by forming the first man from the dust of the ground and “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” so that the man became a living being (Genesis 2:7). The Bible says human beings were created “in the image of God” (Genesis 1:27). We value and protect human life because all life is sacred, bearing the image and breath of God, Himself.
Humans have value because they were given value by God, Himself, who has infinite, incalculable worth. Who can name His worth? Likewise, who can name the worth of a human being pulsing with the breath of God, reflecting like a mirror to the universe the image of God? Christians value and protect all human life because people bear the incalculable worth of God; people who are like us and those different from us, those with the same skin color and different, those who agree with us as well as those who disagree, those who are young and old, those who are healthy and unhealthy, those who are born and unborn.
So we pray now for our Supreme Court to make this great evil right. Before the Supreme Court now is a case which gives our justices the opportunity to change the Roe v. Wade ruling and again allow states to make the necessary laws to protect the unborn. We pray for our current justices, acknowledging that the 1973 court acted in a darkly sinful affront to Almighty God. And we do so in submission to the word of God which commands us to “Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands; seek righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the anger of the LORD” (Zephaniah 2:3).
We will be incredibly blessed to have Dr. Marc Clauson do the preaching for Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Marc is professor of law and history at Cedarville University and a faithful member of Veritas Church in Dayton, OH. He loves God and God’s word and loves teaching the church. Please join us for our in person gathering or online here this Sunday.
